The internship: a gateway into the labour market

Completing an internship may not always be a requirement for graduation, however, it can open up a world of possibilities. In addition to providing a glimpse into the daily life of a profession, improving one's profile for a future job search and clarifying a career choice, an internship can help guide the completion of one's studies and acquire key knowledge and interpersonal skills. In other words, it is a perfect opportunity to confront one's perception of the working world with reality!

1. Define your ideal internship environment

For many, the most challenging aspect is deciding where to do their internship: in a regional or urban area, in a well-known or lesser-known company, where there is better pay but less interesting mandates, or vice versa... Only you have the answers to these questions. Nevertheless, you should know that in Quebec, companies of all sizes, in all sectors and in all regions are opening their doors to interns. You can explore the main sectors of activity by region on the Government of Quebec website.

2. Use your network and alternative resources

In addition to your CEGEP or university's internship and placement service, there are many ways to find an internship on your own, whether by approaching companies that interest you directly, through networking evenings and career days, or by browsing external websites such as Emploi Québec. When looking for an internship, it is often recommended to take every possible avenue to find the experience that best suits you.

Internships are an experience for everyone

Some target groups (women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, persons with disabilities, people of Aboriginal origin, newcomers or first-year students) may be concerned about their place in the labour market. The fact that they are from an under-represented group in the labour market should not be an obstacle to their success. That is why HR Practices, in partnership with AXTRA, the alliance of employment counselling centers, offers free additional support to companies and interns from these target groups, before and during the internship, all to facilitate their integration and offering them a successful experience.
